"The tinkling of the rattles and the dull clatter of the stick through the narrow "calli" precede his fame. The dim light of the lantern is the last warning... Run away, mortals!
The Plague Doctor has arrived."
The Plague Doctor was a real man who lived in the Middle Ages. His origins were mysterious, which is part of his intrigue. What we do know is that Charles de Lorme, a famous French doctor who lived in the 17th century, gave this mask the famous appearance that we all know today. The inside of its long beak-like nose was filled with spices and aromatic herbs incorrectly believing that isolating the bad smell coming from the plague victim would prevent contagion. Given the limited medical knowledge of the time, the chances of contracting the plague were not only associated with the inhaled acrid odour coming from the patient, but also with the ghosts that were hovering around the sick person and the doctor. Hence, the idea of wearing a gloomy mask to scary these spectral figures.
In keeping with the Campiello tradition, every mask we produce comes from a model we make ourselves. The Plague doctor is made with papier-mâché placed by hand and aged with bitumen, dried straw used to fill the beak cavity and ornamental glasses. These elements are finished with perfectly matching straps in real leather for the wearable version or with black satin ribbons for the upholstery version of the mask. Wearing the Plague Doctor will give you the unique chance to play the role of a timeless icon.
